At Avala we really care about the food we serve. Not just how a dish looks and tastes, we care about every ingredient, where we source them and the suppliers we use. It’s about being responsible and considering what we do and how we do it. For us, it’s not just a fad, it’s a holistic approach that defines our business.
We don’t stand on soapboxes to shout about the morals and ethics behind farming methods, but when Avala was set up it was with a conscious decision to work, as much as possible, with ingredients that are in season, readily available without resorting to products shipped in from thousands of miles away. Of course, there are occasional instances where, depending on specific client requirements, we have to source elsewhere, but over the years we have established excellent working relationships with local suppliers who we trust to provide top quality products, grown without heavy use of pesticides or genetic manipulation. We strive to be an ethical catering company that you can trust.
We look for suppliers who believe in traditional farming methods, where every carrot is different and not grown to a uniform size, where it’s acceptable for potatoes to be an odd shape. When it comes to meat, we look for suppliers whose livestock are grass fed, poultry that can roam freely outside, animals that enjoy a good life with plenty of space and natural light.
The food industry is changing. People are becoming increasingly aware of the benefits of food that is ethically sourced and traditionally farmed – it’s better for the environment, better for our health and it even tastes better – and we are proud to be at the forefront of that change as an ethical catering company. But we never rest on our laurels, we are constantly looking to develop our offer and to discover more like-minded suppliers with whom we can work.
The media is full of doom and gloom about climate change and how we need to change our behaviours very much sooner than later. At Avala, we’re proud that for many years we have been doing everything we can to minimise our impact on the environment becoming a sustainable and environmentally friendly catering company. From the ingredients we use to how we conduct our business, we are committed to taking a sustainable approach to catering. We work hard to minimise food waste and, should there be leftover food after an event, we make sure it’s collected for composting. We’ve reduced our use of single-use plastics and we avoid using items that can’t be recycled, sourcing environmentally friendly alternatives instead. Even the use of non-recyclable plastic clingfilm, so often an essential in the kitchen, has been phased out in our efforts to be an ethical catering company in Surrey. And depending on the events we are working on, we also encourage our clients to think sustainably – perhaps using recyclable/compostable serviettes if appropriate or, at a more relaxed function, suggesting wooden cutlery and compostable cups.
Quite simply, it means fresher, healthier and more tasty food on your menu. Whether you want to shout about it to your guests so that they know something of ‘the story’ behind the food they’re eating, we’ll leave that completely up to you. Everyone enjoys life’s little luxuries, but it’s good to know that some luxuries, such as a fantastic feast served at a special event, isn’t at the cost of the environment. As an ethical catering company, we want to ensure your food is environmentally friendly and sourced from sustainable methods.
And it doesn’t compromise in any way the service we provide – if anything, it makes us strive even harder to be an ethical and environmentally friendly catering service. Quality goes hand in hand with our ethos, as does careful consideration for dietary requirements. We can cater for all types of diets and will make sure that any ‘alternative’ dishes are every bit as enjoyable and delicious as the main menu.
